Papers, 1832-1881.

The papers of Elijah Porter Barrows consist mainly of Barrows' manuscript writings and notes. Among these are sermons (1832-1880), an incomplete Hebrew grammar text, outlines of lectures on the Kingdom of God, commentary on the Book of Proverbs, notes to a treatise on Proverbs, and introductions to the Old and New Testaments. Also included is a typescript autobiography of 180 pages (1881).

Elijah Porter Barrows was born in 1807 in Mansfield, Connecticut. He received the A.B. in 1826 and the A.M. in 1829 from Yale University. His D.D. degree was awarded by Dartmouth College in 1858. Barrows was ordained to the ministry in 1832 and for four years was an evangelist preacher in Connecticut. From 1835 to 1837, he served as pastor of the Dey Street Presbyterian Free Church in New York City. The Graduate School of Theology began as the Theological Department of Oberlin Collegiate Institute in 1833. Academic work began in 1835 with the arrival of rebel seminarians from Lane Theological Seminary. By the 1870s, the school had become known as the Oberlin Theological Seminary.
